What is PVCu / uPVC?
Polyvinyl chloride more correctly but unusually poly(vinyl chloride), commonly abbreviated PVC, is the world’s third-most widely produced synthetic plastic polymer, after polyethylene and polypropylene.
PVC comes in two basic forms: rigid (sometimes abbreviated as RPVC) and flexible. The rigid form of PVC is used in construction for pipe and in profile applications such as doors and windows. It is also used for bottles, other non-food packaging, and cards (such as bank or membership cards).
It can be made softer and more flexible by the addition of plasticizers, the most widely used being phthalates. In this form, it is also used in plumbing, electrical cable insulation, imitation leather, signage, inflatable products, and many applications where it replaces rubber. Source
Why should we use PVCu / uPVC?
-Lower density weight than legacy materials, lowering transport and installation costs
-Lower modulus than legacy materials means flexibility and reduced risk of breakage
-Strong and lighter weight providing excellent Health and Safety benefits
-Plastic pipe installations have reduced leakage compared to legacy materials due to longer pipe lengths and high-integrity joint systems
-Can be manufactured from recycled materials
-Proven second life – 100% recyclable
-Ability to use off-site construction techniques to minimise cost and time on-site
-Non-corrosive & does not rot
-Chemical resistant
-No need for painting – appearance stays fresh (source)
Why should I stick to the same manufacturer when it comes to some products?
Some products need to fit perfectly with one-another as some makes may differ very slightly in spec. A prime example of this is guttering. You should try and stick to the same manufacturer for continuity of colour, sizing and specifications. If you aren’t sure on ‘what goes with what’ get in touch with us and we will be more than happy to advise.
Jargon buster / commonly used terms
If you are starting out in the construction industry or starting some DIY, we know it can be tricky to get your head around all the different product references! Here we show you the many names they might be referred to as.
Troffin – the word ‘troughing’ is sometimes used to simply refer to guttering. In Norfolk this is usually pronounced ‘traaaafin’!
Bull nose – means something is round edged or curved.
Onions – otherwise know as ‘Unions’. These connect 2 lengths of guttering together.
lollipops – this refers to end caps on the end of products such as fascia or guttering.
Soffit – multipurpose flat board. Mainly used on the underside of the roofline below the fascia board.
Coverboard – also referred to as cappit, reveal liner, cloaking, over-clad or cover fascia
Window boards – polyboard or duraboard

The nook appeal
At PBS we are very proud to have supported East Anglia’s Children’s Hospice (EACH) charity for 20 years and continue to support their outstanding work with families and children.
EACH provides a wide range of services and support to children and families with life threatening conditions.
EACH, which provides care and support to life-threatened children, has outgrown its current hospice in Quidenham. Due to the changing and more complex needs of the children and young people they care for and the increased demand for their services and needs to move to a purpose-built site. The nook will be built in Framingham Earl just south of Norwich and will offer services which are either currently unavailable or extremely limited at Quidenham.
To help these families even more they are trying to raise money for their Nook Appeal. A new state of the art hospice in Poringland, where it will be situated on an idyllic woodland plot, creating a wonderful tranquil setting for children, young people and their families. It will also be better positioned in the county, within a thriving local community and won’t be as isolated from services, hospitals and road networks.
Stephen Gibling, Director at PBS, said: “We are very proud to have supported East Anglia’s Children’s Hospice (EACH) for 20 years and continue to support their outstanding work with families and children. EACH provides a wide range of services and support to children and families with life-threatening conditions. To help these families even more they are trying to raise money for their nook appeal to build a new state of the art facility in Norfolk. They can’t do this without our help, that’s why at PBS we have committed ourselves to raise £15,000 in the next three years for the appeal. I’d encourage other businesses across Norfolk to join us and support this worthy local cause!”

We need the support of all sectors of the Norfolk community – individuals, schools, community groups and of course the business sector to achieve our fundraising target , so support from PBS is fantastic and we very much look forward to working with them.”
